ABOUT US

Hi and welcome to the Noosa Photo Club. The Noosa Photo Club is a proud member of the Photographic Society of Queensland – otherwise knows as PSQ.

We are lucky to be located in one of Australia's premier tourist destinations.

Noosa offers an excellent climate, a beautiful north facing beach, a World Heritage listed National Park is right on the doorstep plus sophisticated dining and shopping in the Hastings Street and Gympie Terrace precincts.

There are lots of interesting venues to visit in the Hinterland within a short drive from Noosa.

Throughout the year there are special events such as the Jazz Festival, Triathlon, Surfing Festival and Noosa Long Weekend and all of these add up to a plethora of photo opportunities.

Within Noosa's population of over 50,000 there are many photographers who like to take advantage of the wealth of subjects on offer and what better way to share their images and learn more about photography than to join a Photo Club.

We have been around since 1994 and our activities and pograms are structured to provide the best environment for new and budding photographers and to challenge our more experienced exponents.

Noosa Photo Club looks to engage members in an interactive and socially rewarding environment built around the pursuit of knowledge and experience in photography. It doesn't matter if you are interested in any aspect of photography as we probably have someone in our organisation who knows something about it and would be interested in learning more with you.

MONTHLY CRITIQUING RULES

Prior to each meeting a member may submit a total of three digital images, one being in the “Open” category and two being in the “Set Subject” category for critiquing by a judge.

These images should be sent to Narelle Hore via email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

no later than the 25th of the month in preparation for the following months competition.

Also images must not be presented for any competitions throughout the year more than twice and please do not put two of the same images in a competition, one being colour and the same image in B&W.

These will be sent to a remote judge who will view the images and write his critique and give a score out of 10, after which Barry will put together in a recorded slide show to be viewed at the next club meeting.

The photographer of each image will not be identified to the judge or during the recorded slide show unless it is one of the higher scoring photos. This is so the judges session is a non threatening way for members to get feedback on their work.

Please note:- Only members of Noosa PC will be allowed to enter the competitions.

DIGITAL ENTRY SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Please send your images (maximum of 3 – Two in the Set Subject category and One in the Open category) to Narelle Hore at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it no later than the 25th of the month prior to the competition. This allows Narelle enough time to distribute the images to the judge and for the judge to return them in time for Barry to put the presentation together for the next club meeting.

  • jpeg format only

  • jpeg quality at approx 6

  • For Landscape (horizontal) format size, set the pixel width dimensions to 1024 and let the height take care of itself.

  • For Portrait (vertical) format size, set the pixel height dimensions to 768 and let the width take care of itself.

CLUB OUTINGS

At regular intervals throughout the year we have very informal outings.

These include local places of interest and sometimes will follow a theme, ie sunsets, macro, birds etc. These outings are designed to foster a sharing experience so our novice users can extract as much learning as possible from our more established members. These meetings tend to be in public places and are free of cost.

We are also lucky to have access to a local working studio which presents a great opportunity to bring your own model or one may even be provided. These sessions are best shared with smaller groups of up to eight members and cost around $30 per member.

NOOSA PHOTO SAFARI

This is usually held on a Sunday in August and once again we also invite the surrounding clubs to join us.

We assemble at a chosen site and after registration you are given 10 subjects to photograph. These images must be taken in order of the list of subjects and only 10 images in jpeg format must be presented to the organiser when you have finished. You can take as long or as little time to take these images.

The images will be downloaded onto our laptop on the day and will be sent to a judge for critiquing.

Barry will present these in a slide show and we will show the results at our October meeting.

All we ask is that you bring your own packed lunch and drink and a chair (in case there are not enough seats around).

EXTERNAL EVENTS

There are numerous opportunities to become involved with many of the competitive events that are available. Most are sanctioned by the Photographic Society of Queensland (PSQ) and as such are well advertised on their website www.psq.org.au

We do however have some more local events which we support and encourage all members to participate.

GYMPIE INTERCLUB IMAGE PRESENTATION NIGHT

The main event is the Gympie Camera Club Interclub Image Presentation Night.

This evening consists of clubs from around the area presenting their members images. This is a non competitive event and is a social evening.

We urge all members to take part and if you do you should supply us with up to 15 images. They should preferably be on a theme, ie Images of Flowers, Sunset Images, Your Trip to the Sunshine Coast - the possibilities are endless.

We will collect these from you along with other members' work we will present them in an audiovisual format. This slideshow can be up to 20 minutes in duration.

Please bring your images to the May meeting on a cd.

Gympie Interclub evening is held on the first Tuesday in June, starting at 7pm at the back room of the Cooloola Shire Public Library, 39 Nash Street, Gympie.

We would like to see as many members as possible support this event for Noosa Photo Club.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF QUEENSLAND

The aims of the Photographic Society of Queensland (PSQ) are:-

  • to represent its member photographic clubs and groups and private members in Queensland.

  • To foster and encourage the development of photographic clubs and groups

  • to further the interests, objectives and activities of its member bodies.

PSQ also makes available services such as recorded lectures, lecturers and PSQ accredited judges.

PSQ ANNUAL CONVENTION COMPETITION

On the Queen's birthday holiday weekend in June each year, PSQ conducts a convention and the venue is usually alternated between Brisbane and country clubs. As part of the convention the PSQ conducts an Interclub Competition open to all clubs affiliated with the PSQ. It is a “CLUB” entry and not an individual entry, although a PSQ silver medallion is awarded to the First Place winner in each section.

FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE SEE ONE OF THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS OR VIEW THE PAGES OF THE CONVENTION HERE:-

SUBJECT GUIDE AND DEFINITIONS OF THE PSQ ANNUAL CONVENTION COMPETITION

  • NATURE: Nature photography depicts living, untamed animals and uncultivated plants in a natural habitat, geology and the wide diversity ofnatural phenomena, from insects to icebergs. Photographs of animals which are domesticated, caged or under any form of constraint, as well as photographs of cultivated plants are ineligible.

Minimal evidence of humans is acceptable for nature subjects, such as barn owls or storks adapting to an environment modified by humans, or natural forces like cyclones or tidal waves, reclaiming it.

The original image must have been taken by the photographer whatever photographic medium is used.

Any manipulation or modification to the original image is limited to minor retouching or blemishes and must not alter the content of the original scene. After satisfying the above requirement, every effort should be made to use the highest level of artistic skill in all nature photographs.

  • LANDSCAPE : A landscape is a picture of natural inland scenery. It may include houses, other evidence of man, people, animals and even part of the sea provided that none of these dominate the picture. Many tree studies can be described as landscapes but a close up of a tree is more properly described as a Tree Study.

  • SEASCAPE: A seascape is a photograph in which the sea or waves predominate. Coastal features of the shoreline may be included to a lesser degree. People, boats and items related to these may also be present as incidental items in the picture.

  • OPEN/PICTORIAL: Any subject that is treated pictorially, embodying the elements of good design, arrangement or composition which reflects the personal interpretation of the photographer.

  • SOCIAL DOCUMENTARY: Concerned with the portrayal and interpretation of society encompassing both human and non-human subject matter.

  • PHOTOJOURNALISM: Photojournalism entries must be story-telling pictures such as seen in the news media and in periodicals. They may include documentary, sport, sport news or human interest.

  • CREATIVE/EXPERIMENTAL: Either (a) a photograph which displays a novel effect because of an unusual combination of objects and/or an unusual viewpoint, or (b) a photograph in which the images have been modified during exposure, or © a photograph which has been modified after exposure by the use of a digital technique. Always the picture must have a basic photographic image.

Digital processes that are the work of the entrant are included.

SET SUBJECTS:  The monthly newsletter will contain further information on the set subject guidelines.
